There is a lot of reason for pessimism and fear when we look at the rapid, negative changes to the environment and their effects to millions of species. So much is happening so quickly; it’s overwhelming. As individuals, it’s very hard to understand what’s happening to the Earth, what can be done to improve it and how each of us can make a difference.
Why become an Earth Hacker?
I started Earth Hackers because I wanted a way to track and store the stories and ideas that inspire me and give me hope. I want to share them with other people to see what we can do to make a difference, no matter how small.
The premise
As a former Scout leader with Scouts Canada, the Leave No Trace movement we practice makes so much sense. Why only employ it when camping or experiencing nature? What if we humans could approach how we reside on Earth with similar goals, to Leave No Trace and even… make things better or right past wrongs?
Understanding and fixing
The world we live in is far more complex than what meets the eye. Damage has been done, often in many cases, due to ignorance about the downstream impacts. When we stop and think about how the complex systems of the Earth interconnect, it’s transformational. But it’s not easy to understand!
How can we see how the Earth has been harmed and then use our ingenuity to fix it? What hacks can we use to alter the landscape and how we live to make things better?
This site is a way to explore how we can make the Earth a better place and approach living in a more sustainable way, by thinking, dreaming and taking actions both big and small.
Let’s get started.
